The richness of an organisation comes from its people,
yet recruiting staff or promoting within the organisation, can be a bit 'iffy'
through managers being ill prepared for the actual interview, lacking
interviewing skills or making an irrational decision within a few minutes of
starting the interview.
Studies have shown that in U.K decisions are made within 3 minutes of
the applicant entering the room. Many of these decisions are a result of
appointing people in our own image, the halo effect. To quote one manager, I
used to base my recruitment on fairly inappropriate criteria in that I made an
effort to employ people I already knew and got on with. Within a year I learnt
that I was wrong - you're not employing people to expand your social life; you're
employing people to do a job."
The all important word is 'Criteria.' For any job you need to draw up a
picture of the requirements of the job, which could include scope of the job,
main responsibilities, critical tasks, values, etc. You also need a picture of
the type of person you visualise filling this post. This could include the
knowledge, skills and competencies, education etc. required. Now armed with job
and person specifications, you have some of the component parts for being in a
better position to interview job applicants or promote existing staff based on
criteria requirements.
Right job + Focused, committed people
= organisational success.
To quote another manager
You get the people you deserve
In other words if you put time and effort into the recruitment &
promotion process and the actual interview, then you will get people who are
focused and committed to the goals of the organisation and who are in harmony
with its values..
Achieve-Success works in partnership with organisations to design a
recruitment, selection and promotion process.
Recruiting and promoting people is an essential management skill. Selecting
focused, committed people is the bedrock of any organisation. Get it wrong and
the consequences could be dire. Do you honestly believe your managers are
equipped and skilled to undertake recruitment, selection and promotion
interviews? Should the answer be no, then attending our Recruitment & Selection
Recruitment course is strongly recommended. We run both in house and public
courses.
